Each year thousands of film releases on the box-office and in order to drive the audience to watch the film, just a big name or having a superstar cast is not enough. Appropriate promotion is needed by the stars so that people get connected to it and come to watch it. There is a separate promotion team that decides various strategies to help the celebs grab some attention from our audience. Sometimes the desire to create a buzz drives our celebs so crazy that they start adopting strange methods to get attention for their film.
So let’s know more about it and look at some promotional techniques which were strange enough to get our attention.
1. Bipasha Basu
Bipasha Basu’s horror film “Raaz 3” was based on the idea of superstition. So in order to promote her film, Bipasha was seen distributing lemon and chilies at traffic signals which most of us use to drive away negative energy. Fans were quite shocked at seeing her weird promotional strategy. It looks like all the negative energy goes away when the movie makes good money :-).
2. Sonam Kapoor
Sonam Kapoor is surely the first one to bring the Dubsmash trend in this film industry. She asked her fans to shake a leg on her title track “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” and it totally worked as the song became viral and started trending on social media. Not only her fans but many Bollywood celebs were seen dancing on this track on Dubsmash and her strategy really grabbed our attention. This is what should be called “Dance pe chance maarna”.
3. Aamir Khan
Aamir Khan is surely the best when it comes to promotional ideas because they’re just spot on. For his film “Ghajini”, he shaved people’s heads in the same way as his character in the movie and this weird strategy actually worked out for his film. Also for the movie “PK”, Aamir released a poster of him just wearing a stereo which went so viral that people started creating memes on it and it was trending topic for discussion. The best part of the promotion of the movie Ghajini was aam aadmi got a haircut for free, Some media attention and a good memory.
4. Vidya Balan
To promote her film “Bobby Jasoos”, Vidya Balan disguised herself as a beggar and sat amongst the crowd of beggars outside a railway station in Hyderabad. No one could recognize her and a woman who thought of her as a beggar actually scolded her to move out of her way. Even to promote her film Kahaani she started wearing a fake bump to grab attention. Truly Vidya Balan’s movie choices and promotion strategies both are quite unique.
5. Alia Bhatt
The internet went crazy when Alia Bhatt posted an engagement card photo of her and Arjun Kapoor. After reading the full thing fans realized that it was to promote her film “2 States” and was nothing more than that. Marriages are an integral part of Indian culture. Moviemakers made good use of the wedding cards to create a buzz but Alia getting married was a big fake sweet surprise.
6. Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, and Katrina Kaif
The whole film of “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” was set on the base of friendship and how a road trip makes them come closer. So in order to promote their film, the whole cast of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara went on a road trip from Mumbai to Delhi. Road trips are one of the best memories and memorable experience. It looks like the purpose of the promotion strategy was to convey the same message but the strategy was quite offbeat.
7. Shah Rukh Khan
Shah Rukh Khan is also the king of promotions and it is as grand as his films. To promote his film “Happy New Year”, he and the entire star cast went on a world tour. Yes, you heard it right, they went on a WORLD TOUR for a month. The promotion strategy was quite different but surely it was well planned based on our heart-throb king SRK’s global following. Looks like the director must be calculating all the expenses while traveling with the crew 🙂 .
8. Sunny Leone
Sunny Leone’s promotional strategies are a bit odd. To promote her film Ragini MMS, the team had many auto drivers write on their auto’s “Ragini Ka MMS Dekha ?”. The plan worked and the google searches for Ragini MMS went highly up overnight. Even to promote her film “Jism 2”, her undergarments were put up for auction. Yes, you read it right. The promotion team can go to any extent sometimes to make the movie popular.
9. Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone
While promoting their film “Tamasha”, Ranbir, Deepika, and Imtiaz Ali traveled by train from Mumbai to Delhi and went on promoting it the whole way. The strategy worked and grab a lot of media attention. We hope they boarded the train on time :-)…….
10. Aamir Khan
Perfectionist Aamir Khan hits this list again because his ways of promotion are very strange than the others. To promote “3 Idiots”, he went missing for almost two weeks as he disguised himself into an older man and went to small cities to promote his film. This unique strategy worked and it was a fun promotion for him.
