In recent years, Bollywood has evolved and brought some great stories in front of the audience. Bollywood has become more socially concerned these days as we see dozens of films on social issues.

There was a time when Bollywood was making movies only of Chor-Police drama and filled the 3 hours run time with actions and song sequences.

Surprisingly, movies nowadays are filled with messages and life lessons. Some movies deal with subjects related to physical and mental health. We have created a list of Bollywood Movies that have shown the illness in its own quirky ways.

These are the illnesses that is not known to many because of their rarity. In most of the ways, these movies educate the viewers about the illness and show the right way to deal with it.

1. Anand – lymphosarcoma of the intestine (1971)

Anand is one of the best movies in Bollywood. It is probably the first of its kind where the story is about a person who wants to live his remaining life enjoying everything.

In the movie, two superstars shared the screen space together. In the movie, Anand has lymphosarcoma of the intestine. Since it is an uncommon type of cancer, there is no specific optimal treatment of this disease.

2. Black – Alzheimer (2005)

The story of the Black revolves around a beautiful relationship shared between a teacher and a student. Rani Mukerji played the character of a deaf-blind girl and Amitabh Bachchan played the character of a strict teacher.

Later in the movie, Amitabh Bachchan developed Alzheimer in which people forget things easily. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disorder that causes brain cells to degenerate and die. 

3. Taare Zameen Par – dyslexia (2007)

Taare Zameen Par shows the perfect depiction of the life of a little boy named Ishaan. The movie focuses on Ishaan’s struggle in doing his regular things in day-to-day life.

The movie explored dyslexia symptoms and how they should be dealt with. Another big message from the movie was every child is special, all you need is to let them fly in the direction they want to.

4. Ghajini – anterograde amnesia (2008)

The action-thriller Ghajini starring Aamir Khan depicted the life of a business tycoon who is suffering from anterograde amnesia.

Amnesia refers to the loss of memories, such as information, facts, and experiences. Aamir Khan failed to create long term memories and could remember things only for 15 minutes.

5. Paa – progeria (2009)

The movie is unique in its way as Abhishek Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan played the lead role in the movie. For the record, Abhishek played the father of his real-life father Amitabh Bachchan in the movie.

The movie shows a rare disease Progeria which is a disorder that accelerates aging. There are less than 100 patients all over the world who are suffering from Progeria.

6. My Name is Khan – Asperger’s syndrome (2010)

In the movie, Shah Rukh Khan was suffering from Asperger’s syndrome. It is a form of high-functioning autism.

However, the film tried to prove that person can find happiness if understood and treated normally.

7. Guzaarish – quadriplegia (2010)

In the movie, Hrithik Roshan was suffering from quadriplegia. It was the story of a magician who is left paralyzed neck down after a trick goes wrong.

8. Shubh Mangal Saavdhan – erectile dysfunction (2017)

We think it is a very common and known disease. However, people are afraid to talk about it in public. In the movie, Ayushmann Khurrana was suffering from Erectile Dysfunction.

9. Hichki – Tourette Syndrome (2018)

Rani made her comeback to the Bollywood industry with a story of a teacher suffering from Tourette Syndrome. The movie is about the challenges she faces and overcomes.

10. Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota – Congenital Insensitivity to Pain (CIP) (2018)

It is the much-talked film where the protagonist is suffering from Congenital Insensitivity to Pain. In this rare disease, people don’t feel pain.

The movie title was chosen cleverly though. It is the grand debut of Abhimanyu Dassani in Bollywood.

11. Barfi – Autism (2012)

In the movie Barfi, Priyank Chopra was suffering from a rare disease named Autism. She was praised for her performance.

Autism is a kind of developmental disorder which is characterized by difficulties with communication and social interaction, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.
