Controversies are common in the entertainment industry and this year is no exception even when theatres were shut down. Entertainment is like any other industry with cut throat competition between stars. Each star trying to get the best oppurtunity and fame to sustain and ensure their career are rising. Negative publicity is a common way of getting everyone’s attention in last few years and controversies makes public talk about more about their films and increases its popularity. 1. Deepika Padukone’s Visit To Jnu

In the very first month of the year 2020, Deepika Padukone made headlines by paying a visit to the JNU campus where students were protesting against violence. According to sources, the actress was in the university for 10 minutes in the evening and left without saying anything.Fans speculated that the actress is doing nothing but promoting her upcoming release Chhapaak by visiting the JNU campus where protests were ongoing at that moment. Her promotional agenda backfired and people started boycotting her film. The movie got mixed reviews from fans as well as critics.

2. Casteist Slur In Paatal Lok

Paatal Lok became a sensational topic to discuss among movie buffs because of its impelling writing and awesome performance by the ensemble cast. Jaideep Ahlawat, Abhishek Banerjee, and Neeraj Kabi were noticed and appreciated for their performance in the show. However, the web series also attracted controversy over the scene which had a casteist slur in it.In a scene, a female police officer taunted and humiliated a Nepali character. Later, the makers were sued for hurting Gorkha sentiments by their show. An online petition was also issued to I & B Minister Prakash Javadekar in which the Gorkha community demanded that makers must mute the word, blur the subtitle, and apologize for their content.

3. THEATRE OWNERS VS OTT

There is a popular saying that nothing is permanent and this happened with Bollywood.During lockdown while people were locked at home OTT platform got the oppurtunity to change the industry altogether. Ease of Entertainment at home at a fairly reduced price coupled with brilliant stories make it a preferred choice.You might have heard about it but there is a rift between theatre owners and OTT platforms. The rift exposed when the makers announced that the movie Gulabo Sitabo will be released on OTT platforms. Many theatre owners showed disappointment over the movie. The CEO of PVR pictures, Kamal Gianchandani, talked about the rise of the OTT platform during an interview session. The INOX also released a statement showing displeasure on filmmakers going for OTT release.

4. KANIKA KAPOOR’S COVID-19 DIAGNOSIS

There was a time when COVID-19 used to be a new disease for Indians and we were afraid of it. Singer-performer Kanika Kapoor was one of the first Indian celebrities who tested COVID-19 positive. The singer drew everyone’s attention after the round of rumors that she hosted a party and also attended some, ignoring the lockdown.Later, it was found that the singer had hidden her travel history during the lockdown and threw tantrums at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, isolation ward where she was being treated.

5. SONU NIGAM VS T-SERIES

The sudden demise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput created a big controversy related to nepotism, favoritism, gangs, and many other things. Many actors and singers came up and reported the mistreatment from the people who own the industry.Sonu Nigam claimed that the music industry also has a bigger mafia and he requested music companies to appreciate newcomers. The singer accused T-Series and its owner Bhushan Kumar. Later, Divya Khosla Kumar labelled Sonu Nigam thankless as T-Series had given him his first break.

6. IAF ON GUNJAN SAXENA

The biopic of Gunjan Saxena drew controversies by showing the Indian Air Force in a negative light. While the movie was made to promote Indians to join Airforce, it showed how the male pilot was misbehaving with the female pilot. The center had filed a plea before the Delhi high court to put a stay on Netflix. Delhi High Court refused the plea asking why no objections were raised before the release of the film.

7. KANGANA RANAUT VS JAVED AKHTAR

Javed Akhtar filed a criminal complaint against actress Kangana Ranaut for making a defamatory statement about him in interviews. Javed Akhtar stated that her wild allegations caused harm to his reputation and asked to register the cast under section 499 and 500 of IPC.

8. A SUITABLE BOY ACCUSED OF HURTING SENTIMENTS

Mira Nair’s critically acclaimed web series A Suitable Boy came into controversy for hurting religious sentiments by showing a kissing scene in a temple. The web series was released on BBC and Netflix and appreciated by fans as well as critics.

9. LAXMII TITLE ROW

The movie Laxmii was titled Laxmmi Bomb initially. However, makers were accused of hurting Hindu sentiments and disrespecting Goddess Laxmi. Sources revealed that the makers got the legal notice from Shri Rajput Karni Sena to change the title.

10. FABULOUS LIVES OF BOLLYWOOD WIVES TITLE

The famous director Madhur Bhandarkar accused Karan Johar of taking the movie title Bollywood Wives for his web series. Madhur tweeted that he has his project underway titled Bollywood Wives.Later, Karan Johar responded that the format, audience, nature, and title of the series were different from what Madhur Bhandarkar is planning. It is not an exploitation of his work at all.
